Hola What’s Hot Fam,
Actually, “poor unfortunate souls” seems a bit more fitting for this post. The Little Mermaid is making a splash back in theaters this spring with this live-action remake directed by filmmaker Rob Marshall (‘Mary Poppins Returns’).
Staying true to the plot of the 1989 animated film, this story follows the adventurous mermaid Ariel. (Although, this time she’s a dreadlocked ginger!) As Walt Disney Studios describes, she’s “the youngest of King Triton’s daughters and the most defiant.” Her desire to find out more about humans and life on land brings her in the midst of a romantic situation-ship with a two-legged lad named Prince Eric.

I just want to know more about them.
– Ariel (Halle Bailey), The Little Mermaid
There’s just one problem. Mermaids are forbidden to interact with humans. However, Ariel must follow her heart and makes a deal with the evil sea witch, Ursula, that turns her human. Obviously, that isn’t going to go well…
The film stars:
singer and actress Halle Bailey (‘grown-ish’) as Ariel;
Jonah Hauer-King (‘A Dog’s Way Home’) as Prince Eric;
Daveed Diggs (‘Hamilton’) as the voice of Sebastian;
Awkwafina (‘Raya and the Last Dragon’) as the voice of Scuttle;
Jacob Tremblay (‘Luca’) as the voice of Flounder;
Noma Dumezweni (‘Mary Poppins Returns’) as Queen Selina;
Art Malik (‘Homeland’) as Sir Grimsby;
Javier Bardem (‘No Country for Old Men’) as King Triton;
and Melissa McCarthy (‘Can You Ever Forgive Me?,’ ‘Bridesmaids’) as Ursula
Walt Disney Studios reports:
The songs feature music from multiple Academy Award® winner Alan Menken (“Beauty and the Beast,” “Aladdin”) and lyrics by Howard Ashman, and new lyrics by three-time Tony Award® winner Lin-Manuel Miranda. The film is produced by two-time Emmy® winner Marc Platt (“Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert,” “Grease Live!”), Miranda, two-time Emmy winner John DeLuca (“Tony Bennett: An American Classic”), and Rob Marshall, with Jeffrey Silver (“The Lion King”) serving as executive producer.

Collider reports that after ‘The Little Mermaid’ has completed its run on the big screens, the film will likely be released on the Disney+ streaming service. However, based on Disney’s past release models, this probably won’t happen until 45 to 90 days after its theatrical release.
‘The Little Mermaid’ debuts exclusively in theaters nationwide May 26, 2023.
