In case you were wondering, “you still can’t sit with us.”
That’s right the Mean Girls are back and this time they’ve got songs – and new faces. Described as a new twist on the modern classic from the multitalented Tina Fey, this musical motion picture brings a new generation of (and a few returning) actors and actresses to a familiar storyline.
True to the original, Cady Heron (Angourie Rice) is thrown into a new jungle known as high school. Immediately gaining the attention of the leading pack, “The Plastics,” the infamous Regina George (Reneé Rapp) and her minions Gretchen (Bebe Wood) and Karen (Avantika) embrace Cady tumultuously throwing her into Girl World. However, when Cady’s crush on Regina’s ex-boyfriend Aaron Samuels (Christopher Briney) is revealed, it doesn’t take long for the claws to come out. With the help of her outcast friends Janis (Auli’i Cravalho) and Damian (Jaquel Spivey), the new girl sets out to take down the Queen Bee.
Directed by Samantha Jayne and Arturo Perez Jr., Mean Girls also stars The Office‘s Jenna Fischer, White Chicks‘ Busy Philipps, and writer and creator Tina Fey with Saturday Night Live‘s Tim Meadows (Mean Girls 2004).
In the final trailer released Wednesday, January 3, “Savage” rapper Megan Thee Stallion can be heard on a track alongside Regina George 2.0 herself, Reneé Rapp.
“I been told ya’ll I’m the Black Regina George,” Megan spits on the track titled “Not My Fault.”
While the trailers alone haven’t fully revealed the film as a musical, there are easter eggs throughout the promotional materials including a musical note carved out in the letter “A” of the title design. Another clue, the most recent trailer’s title “Revenge Party” is itself a song title from the Broadway soundtrack. Furthermore, the “Regina’s version” trailer released in November 2023 shows Rapp singing “My name is Regina George.”
The Mean Girls soundtrack will be available to stream and the film will debut in theaters on January 12, 2024.
