I Know What You Did Last Summer (2025) – Cast, Plot & Trailer Breakdown

The 2025 reboot of I Know What You Did Last Summer (2025) hits theaters July 18—and it’s already stirring up buzz, especially for fans of the original 1997 cult horror. With a fresh cast, some familiar faces, and a new director, this continuation is aiming to balance nostalgia with modern slasher vibes. But does it deliver?

Let’s get into what you can expect: from the plot to the cast to a breakdown of that action-packed trailer.

🩸 Plot

The story follows five friends whose lives change forever after they cause a fatal car accident—and decide to cover it up. They make a pact to keep it a secret, but a year later, someone clearly didn’t forget. The mysterious killer knows exactly what they did last summer and is out for revenge.

As the body count starts to rise, the group learns their haunting isn’t entirely new. They turn to the only people who may understand: two survivors of the infamous Southport Massacre of 1997.

This version blends familiar beats with what might be a few new twists. One character ominously suggests, “One of us is hiding something,” which hints that this killer might be closer than anyone thinks.

🎭 Cast

The latest I Know What You Did Last Summer assembles a mix of fresh faces and iconic returns. Madelyn Cline (Outer Banks), Chase Sui Wonders (Bodies Bodies Bodies), and Jonah Hauer-King (The Little Mermaid) headline the main crew, alongside Tyriq Withers, Sarah Pidgeon, and Gabbriette Bechtel. Billy Campbell and Austin Nichols round out the adult ensemble.

But the biggest draw for OG fans? The return of Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. Their characters—Julie James and Ray Bronson—are back to help the youngins navigate the trauma they once lived through. It’s a smart move that not only honors the legacy but draws various generations in.

Let’s talk trailer. Immediately, there are some impressive visual choices. The sequence with the wedding invitation—the classic “I Know What You Did Last Summer” note—is chilling. The design elements, like the typewriter font and calendar flip back to July 4th, were sharp, consistent, and dripping in horror nostalgia.

The lakeside setting, the frantic flashbacks, and the water-centric accident sequence all echo the original in the best way. And the reveal of Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. returning? Chef’s kiss. That alone will drive OG fans back to the theater.

The trailer also teases the return of the franchise’s most iconic line: “What are you waiting for?!” This time, though, it’s delivered with more confidence than chaos. Where Julie once screamed it in desperation, now it’s more of a challenge—like she’s ready to face the killer head-on. Knowing a fan once got to direct that original scene makes the callback even more special.

That said, the trailer did have some weak spots. When Julie said “You can’t run, you can’t hide,” it felt overly dramatic for what’s still (presumably) a human killer. Also, while the nostalgia is strong, the trailer doesn’t tease much that’s new. If you glance at your phone, you might miss the line suggesting it could be an inside job, or maybe the killer is a legacy character’s child. But outside of that, the setup looks almost identical to the 1997 version.

Still, I Know What You Did Last Summer looks like a solid summer slasher with enough style to make it entertaining. Based on the trailer alone? I’m rating it 🔥 3 out of 5 flames. Let’s hope the full movie brings more surprises.
